New Community College Scholarship Program Announced by LIPA
Officials from the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) joined with representatives from Nassau Community College and Suffolk County Community College to announce a new community college scholarship program. The LIPA Scholarship is designed to provide education and training for students from households with incomes below the median income of Long Island and the Rockaways (approximately $100,000 for a family of four) living in historically underserved communities.
The LIPA Scholarship is a $350,000 commitment over the next five years to provide 50 full scholarships for students to attend either Nassau or Suffolk County Community College to obtain an associate’s degree or certificate that will help them pursue a career in the electric utility or clean energy sectors.
This investment is an effort to ensure that our workforce represents all the communities LIPA serves and that all of our customers can participate in the growing career opportunities available in the electric utility and clean energy industry.
Thomas Falcone, Chief Executive Officer of LIPA, said: “Electricity is the clean fuel of the future. Studies predict electricity will provide more than 70 percent of New York’s energy needs by 2050, and that it will be entirely carbon-free. With this growing industry, LIPA’s commitment to fund 50 scholarships at Nassau and Suffolk Community College over the next five years will ensure that our workforce represents all the communities LIPA serves, and that all our customers can participate in the fabulous and growing career opportunities available in the electric sector.”
Dr. Edward T. Bonahue, President of Suffolk County Community College, said: “The Long Island Power Authority’s generous scholarships will help us recruit and sustain students entering the STEM fields transforming our workforce and our region’s economy. With this support, LIPA joins the college in bridging our promising students from financial need to the high-need, high-wage disciplines that lead to a rewarding career.”
Dr. Maria Conzatti, Interim President of Nassau Community College, said: “Together with LIPA, Nassau Community College is pleased to meet the workforce development needs of our business partners and the educational aspirations of the Long Island community.”
The curricula offered at Nassau Community College and Suffolk County Community College include courses relevant to the work LIPA does to meet the clean energy goals set by New York’s Climate Act, as well as to fulfill LIPA’s mission of providing clean, reliable, and affordable energy to Long Island and the Rockaways.
The LIPA Scholarship will support income-qualified, graduating high school seniors, allowing them to extend their educational development and enter the utility and clean energy sectors. Participation in the LIPA Scholarship will provide graduates with a competitive edge in applying for employment at LIPA and its contractor, PSEG Long Island, who plan to hire hundreds of entry-level workers over the next five years.
This five-year program will provide annual funding for ten full-time, two-year scholarships for low- to moderate-income students who reside in disadvantaged communities, as identified by New York’s Climate Justice Working Group, planning to attend Nassau Community College or Suffolk County Community College. Residents of the following communities served by LIPA are eligible for the LIPA Scholarship:

Suffolk County Community College Named a 2021 AASHE Sustainability Award Finalist
The Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) has named Suffolk County Community College as a finalist for a 2021 AASHE Campus Sustainability Achievement Award that recognizes outstanding progress in higher education sustainability.
Suffolk is being lauded for its innovative Mini Virtual Treasure Hunt Event that was achieved with a dedicated team of faculty and staff who presented short online training modules for students, faculty, and staff that highlighted the College’s Energy Conservation Program. The group also presented energy saving tips for both the workplace and home.
“Suffolk’s Office of Sustainability is a leader in cultivating a greener campus by enabling collaboration among students, faculty, administrative departments, and staff that helps create solutions that reduce our carbon footprint,” said Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Edward Bonahue.
”Students were extremely enthusiastic and actively participated in the Energy Treasure Hunt,” said Professor of Chemistry and Department of Natural Sciences Assistant Academic Chair Richa Prakash, adding that they “were very passionate about conserving energy and resources.”
“Discussion Boards were very active and it was helpful having Committee members not only monitor individual boards but be able to provide responses on all boards. It was a very positive sharing experience,” said Office of Sustainability Energy Specialist Carol Malley.
The AASHE Sustainability Awards provide global recognition to the individuals and organizations leading the higher education sustainability movement. With the help of volunteer judges, this program raises the visibility of high-impact projects, pioneering research, and student leadership that helps to disseminate innovations and inspire continued progress toward environmental, social and economic health.
The finalists were selected based on overall impact, innovation, stakeholder involvement, clarity and other criteria specific to each award category. Winners will be celebrated during a virtual awards ceremony on Thursday, Dec. 9 at noon Eastern.

Teamwork, Dedication and Creativity are Hallmarks of Suffolk’s Shift to Remote Operations During Pandemic
For Immediate Release Teamwork, Dedication and Creativity are Hallmarks of Suffolk’s Shift to Remote Operations During PandemicThe coronavirus pandemic has temporarily disrupted life for Suffolk County Community College, but it hasn’t dampened the spirit and ingenuity of those determined to carry out the college’s mission, make a difference and continue classes and services for students. The sudden shift of instruction on March 23 from the classroom to 2,903 online classes for Suffolk’s nearly 20,000 students took place in less than two weeks. A herculean task matched by shifting Suffolk’s libraries, advising, counseling, financial aid, and a host of other services to remote operation built on a foundation built by Suffolk’s Information Technology (IT) Department. “How do you move nearly 3,000 course sections to online in only two weeks?” asked Suffolk County Community College Interim President Louis Petrizzo. “You ask our faculty to do the impossible and they deliver in record time for our students. We are eternally grateful for the dedication of our faculty, our front-line employees in Public Safety and Plant Operations who pulled together in this time of need,” Petrizzo said. Suffolk’s libraries are providing virtual hours, online chat and electronic resources for students. Counselors and advisors are meeting with students via Zoom, email and telephone and Suffolk’s Veterans Affairs resource centers are hosting virtual office hours. Later this month the group will host a virtual meeting and discussion with a World War II veteran who is a Battle of the Bulge survivor and concentration camp liberator. The Zoom meeting is open to all. The college is also calling every Suffolk student to answer questions and provide direction to resources. More than 13,000 students have been called to date. And, just like all of us, Suffolk students and their families have been affected by the pandemic. Suffolk’s IT Department distributed more than 300 laptops and dozens of hotspots to students who lacked the technology to able to log into online instruction and fielded more than 300 technology inquiries from students. A newly established Suffolk Community College Foundation COVID-19 Emergency Fund has fielded more than 170 students’ applications for support. Ninety percent of students who applied cited job loss, as well as family unemployment and related that a family member or members are ill and being treated for coronavirus. Any enrolled student can apply for emergency funds. “We are here for our students because we’re all in this together,” said Dr. Sylvia A. Diaz, executive director of the Suffolk Community College Foundation. “Our generous donors, our faculty & staff, alumni and corporate partners have all pitched in to help students facing financial hardships because of the pandemic.” Contributions to the student COVID-19 Emergency fund are being accepted at: https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/sccf-covid19. Suffolk even moved activities from its two health clubs online, providing access to a YouTube hosted exercise regimen, and the athletics department is hosting online gaming competitions, while also emphasizing that everyone needs to exercise. The college’s Sustainability Department has continued conservation efforts by celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day with the “Take 1 Less” challenge. Participants are challenged to use one less plastic item a day and document their efforts with photos that are shared on the college’s social media channels. On Earth Day, a virtual nature walk with the Suffolk County Community College Ammerman Campus Environmental Club will take place via Zoom. |
